Volume 1: The selections include Scripture passages (1 Corinthians 2, Psalms 7–8, Isaiah 53, Romans 12, Ephesians 2), classic stories, thoughtful essays, and memorable poems. Students will read authors such as Mark Twain, O. Henry, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Leo Tolstoy, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Booker T. Washington, Helen Keller, and many others. Some pieces are genuinely funny; others carry suspense; some are reflective or devotional; while others sharpen thinking.
Volume 2: This volume brings together three very different books, each one worth settling into. The hilarious Three Men in a Boat begins with an innocent idea—“we should like to go, just for a week, on the river”—and quickly turns into a string of small disasters: meals that won’t come together, luggage that refuses to cooperate, and a boat that seems to have its own mind. The Red House Mystery opens with a country house, a visitor who arrives at the wrong moment, and a sudden death behind a locked door. Keys go missing, passages are searched, and each new clue raises as many questions as it answers. It’s a puzzle that invites students to follow closely and try to get there first. “Some Fools and a Saint” is a story that moves in a different direction. It’s an eerie, fascinating mystery.
Volume 3: This volume brings together two fast-moving novels. The Thirty-Nine Steps begins with a man who says he is “getting bored with life” and quickly finds himself running for it. What follows is a chain of decisions—whom to trust, where to go, what to notice—across London and into the countryside. Names, papers, and small details matter. An exciting, high-stakes story. Miss Cayley’s Adventures starts more lightly, but not quietly. Miss Cayley, a young woman of 21, sets out on her own and is soon dealing with pursuit, disguises, and situations that turn without warning. The interest isn’t just in where she goes, but how she handles it—quick judgment, steady nerve, and a refusal to be easily managed.
